PopSmart Clerk is an AI store clerk for Shopify — a salesperson that lives on every page of a store, reads what each shopper is doing, and says the one thing that helps them buy. It went live on the Shopify App Store in May 2026, installs in about thirty seconds with no code, and starts on a free plan.
Online stores have always sat on the data a great floor associate runs on — what someone is looking at, how long, what they keep comparing, the moment they reach for the back button. They just had no way to act on it in real time. Clerk is that missing voice.

PopSmart Clerk — an AI virtual store clerk that reads behavior and assists, live on the Shopify App Store.
Popups interrupt. A clerk assists.
The default tool for “say something to the shopper” is the popup, and every shopper has learned to hate it: it blocks the screen, shows the same coupon to everyone, and gets dismissed before it is read. Clerk is built to be the opposite — a small avatar and a speech bubble, anchored to a real product, that appears only at the right moment and closes itself. Same goal as the popup, none of the interruption tax.

Same store, very different experience: a full-screen popup versus a clerk that recommends in context.
Nobody has to run it
A popup tool is a second job. Someone has to choose the offer, write the copy, pick which products to push, set the rules for who sees what and when — and then keep all of it current as inventory, prices, and promotions change. Most stores wire one up, tune it once, and let it go stale. Clerk removes that work entirely. There is no campaign to build and no message to write: the AI reads the live catalog and composes every line itself, picks the product from what is actually in stock and on sale, and rewrites itself as the store changes. You turn it on; it works the floor on its own.
Ten kinds of moment
Clerk watches for ten distinct shopping signals, and each one fires a different kind of line, written for that exact situation:
- Product view — “The Classic Tote — back in stock and 15% off this week.”
- Long view, comparing options — “This one comes in three colors. Want to see the Navy?”
- Cart add — “Great pick. Customers who buy this usually grab the matching wallet, too.”
- Cart abandon — “Your cart’s saved — the Leather Tote will be here when you’re ready.”
- Exit intent — “Before you go — the Canvas Weekender pairs well with what you browsed.”
- Welcome, scroll, inactivity, hover, collection browse — each with its own kind of nudge.
Ten triggers, ten ways of reading the room — not one banner that fires the same way every time.

Each trigger detects a specific behavior and answers with a contextual, product-aware message.
It only ever says what’s true
This is the part that’s easy to miss and hard to get right. Clerk writes every line from the store’s own data — the real product, the live price, the active discount — and it is deliberately forbidden from inventing the things weaker tools lean on. No “everyone’s buying this,” no fake “trending now,” no manufactured scarcity, no “hurry, last chance.” When a shopper is on their way out, it doesn’t fake-panic them; it names one real product and lets them go. A clerk that makes things up gets tuned out. This one is built not to.
A model that actually knows your store
Under each message is a generative model fed a live picture of the catalog — products, variants, sale prices, automatic and buy-X-get-Y discounts, bestsellers, new arrivals, metadata — synced continuously, so it always knows what’s in stock and what’s on sale, backed by 180 days of order history.
That history does real work. Clerk mines co-purchase patterns from past orders to build genuine bundle recommendations: product pages get one focused pick, cart triggers get a complementary set of up to three items, browsing triggers get discovery suggestions — all ranked by what your customers actually buy together, not a generic “you might also like.”
And it sharpens itself. Every day, Clerk runs a learning cycle over which messages earned clicks and conversions in your store, works out the best length, timing, and product angles, and feeds the top performers back into the model as examples. It gets better at your store without you touching anything — reading page-level behavior only, with no emails, no personal data, and no identifying information collected. GDPR compliant by design.
It won’t annoy your customers
The fastest way to ruin “helpful” is to overdo it, so restraint is engineered in. A seven-layer protection system governs every message: per-trigger cooldowns, session caps, dismissal memory, scroll-engagement gates, and visitor-responsiveness tracking. Close a message and that trigger won’t fire again that session. Ignore a few and the clerk quietly backs off. Engage and it leans in. The goal is a good associate who knows when to step back — never a popup that keeps reappearing.
Not a chatbot, not a popup builder
The tools merchants usually reach for are one of two things: a chatbot that waits for the customer to type, or a popup builder that shows everyone the same message. Clerk is neither. It’s a one-way clerk — it speaks, it doesn’t ask the shopper to — and it’s behavior-aware, generating every line for what this visitor is doing right now from this store’s real data. No chat window, no generic templates, no effort asked of the customer.
Make it yours
Set the clerk’s name, role, and avatar (upload your own or pick an animated one), choose a tone — friendly, casual, professional, or formal — decide which triggers are live and where the popover sits, then dress it to match the store: eight theme presets, or full control of colors, twenty-plus fonts, and shapes, with a live preview as you go.

Simple, capped pricing
Start free — 100 interactions a month, no card, and it pauses at the limit instead of charging you. Starter is $29/month for 800 interactions, Pro is $99 for 4,000, each with cheap per-interaction overage and a hard monthly cap, so a viral day can never produce a surprise bill. Every plan includes all ten triggers, the AI messages, the daily self-learning, and full store sync — in any of fourteen languages, generated natively rather than translated from English.
